Welcome to Born to Birth
I believe that a mother's body and mind were both built to be gentle enough to grow new life from a tiny embryo, and yet powerful enough to carry that life, as the baby grows and is then born. My goal is to walk beside you on this journey, and to help you achieve whatever it is you're looking for in your labor and delivery, whether that be a medication-free, midwife-led vaginal birth, a cesarean section, a vaginal birth where your discomfort is kept to a minimum, or whatever birth story is in your heart. No two mothers are the same, no two babies are the same, and no two birth stories are the same, but you were born to give birth, and I am here to help you.

What is a Doula?
There are many 'flavors' of Doula, but they all help and support clients during the childbearing year.
  • Pregnancy support: Doulas will usually assist parents in identifying their dreams and their options for childbirth, and may help them write a birth plan. Quite often, these plans are not what the Doula might have chosen for his or her own births, but a good Doula will support your choices, and will not try to impose personal desires on you. Many Doulas are also certified massage therapists or childbirth educators, and can also help with these services. If not, they can recommend people who can.
  • Labor support: A Doula will be with you from as early in labor as you feel you need her, right through the labor and delivery. Your Doula will offer you not only physical support with things like rebozo and counter-pressure, but also emotional support and information on different options you may have. They are your advocate if and when you need one. There are, however, many things that a Doula does not do during labour, such as give medical advice or deliver your baby, and nor does a Doula try to take the place of any birthing partners you may have with you.
  • Postpartum support: A postpartum Doula will visit you as often as you want after delivery. The services offered by different Doulas vary greatly, but they might include things like helping you process your birth story and find strength from it, helping you with breastfeeding, looking after your baby so you can sleep, teaching you infant massage, tidying your house, cooking for you, or even collecting pre-ordered groceries for you.
  • Miscarriage, Bereavement and Abortion support Doulas also exist, and offer specialized services for those in need of them.
Why hire a Doula?
What the statistics show about doula support during labor:
  • 50% reduction in cesarean sections
  • 25% shorter labors
  • 60% reduction in epidural requests
  • 40% reduction in pitocin use during labor
  • 30% reduction in analgesia (pain killer) use
  • 40% reduction in the use of forceps
